Challenging life circumstances present us with opportunities for growth

In our busy world, though, sometimes our emotional responses to those challenges get pushed to the back burner and simmer, building pressure until they have impacted our ability to function well and enjoy life. Individual therapy can help you to cope with those emotions and process the challenging life circumstances at their root.

Where Adult Therapy Can Offer Support

Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health concern in the U.S., affecting over 40 million adults each year. Symptoms may include chronic worry, physical restlessness, difficulty sleeping, or constant “what if” thoughts.

Without treatment, anxiety can worsen over time, leading to avoidance behaviors, relationship strain, and physical health complications. Long-term, chronic anxiety is linked to increased risks for gastrointestinal issues, heart disease, and immune dysfunction.

Depressed Mood

More than 1 in 6 adults will experience depression at some point in their lives. It’s more than sadness—it can feel like emotional numbness, fatigue, hopelessness, and withdrawal from life.

Persistent depression can impair decision-making, damage relationships, and reduce life expectancy due to its strong correlation with chronic illness and suicide risk. Early intervention can significantly improve long-term mood stability and quality of life.

Life Changes & Transitions

Major life transitions—such as divorce, relocation, career changes, or becoming a parent—are consistently ranked among the top stressors that impact adult mental health.

While often temporary, the stress can disrupt sleep, immune function, and cognitive clarity. If unaddressed, transitions may lead to chronic stress conditions, identity crises, or strained relationships.

Grief & Loss

Grief affects every system in the body—from emotional regulation to immune health. Studies show that prolonged or “complicated grief” affects around 7% - 10% of people and may lead to depression, social withdrawal, or chronic illness if not processed.

Normalizing and understanding the grief process is essential for emotional recovery and long-term psychological health.

Behavioral Challenges

Adults often face persistent behavioral challenges rooted in early conditioning or unresolved emotional struggles—ranging from procrastination to avoidant coping or substance misuse.

Unchecked, these patterns can lead to underemployment, fractured relationships, and reduced self-esteem. Long-term, behavioral rigidity may limit personal growth and psychological flexibility.

ADHD & Executive

Functioning Struggles

Roughly 4.4% of adults in the U.S. have ADHD, though many go undiagnosed. Common signs include disorganization, impulsivity, distractibility, and difficulty managing tasks.

Adults with ADHD are at a higher risk for job instability, relationship conflict, and co-occurring anxiety or depression.

Changes in Family Structure

Divorce, co-parenting, caregiving, or blending families are among the most emotionally and psychologically complex life shifts.

When not addressed, they may impact generational dynamics and family communication for years to come. Therapy gives families a space to explore these transitions without judgment.

School or Academic Stress

Today’s adult learners juggle academic demands with work, parenting, and personal responsibilities—leading to burnout, anxiety, and reduced academic performance.

According to the American Psychological Association, over 60% of college students report overwhelming anxiety. Long-term academic stress may reduce cognitive performance, sleep quality, and overall wellbeing.

Therapy offers support in managing perfectionism, test anxiety, burnout, or imposter syndrome.

Trauma

Approximately 70% of adults have experienced a traumatic event, and for many, its impact lingers in the form of hypervigilance, emotional dysregulation, flashbacks, or chronic tension.

Unresolved trauma is associated with long-term mental health issues such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. It also has well-documented links to chronic physical illnesses like heart disease and autoimmune conditions.

Our trauma-informed counselors offer a gentle, safe space to begin healing. You set the pace. We help you understand the impact of trauma, build emotional regulation skills, and reclaim your story without having to relive it.

Struggling With More

Than One Concern?

Co-occurring mental health challenges are the norm, not the exception. It’s common for someone to experience anxiety and depression simultaneously, or for trauma to underlie emotional regulation struggles.

Addressing the interplay of issues early improves long-term outcomes and reduces the likelihood of relapse or chronic distress.

  • Is 2 months of therapy enough?

It depends on your goals and what you’re working through. Some people find relief in a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support over several months or more.

  • How do you know if you need therapy?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, emotionally drained, or not quite like yourself, therapy can help. You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit—sometimes, simply wanting to grow or feel better is reason enough.

  • Is therapy better than counseling?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but "therapy" may imply a deeper, long-term focus. What matters most is finding the right provider and approach that fits your needs.

  • How long do most patients stay in therapy?

The length of therapy varies. Some clients come for a few months, while others find value in longer-term support—what’s most important is that it’s paced around your needs and goals.

  • Do you accept insurance?

Yes, Infinite Potential is in-network with some providers and can also provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. Contact us and we’ll help you verify your coverage.
